The Scoop: Big Commitments, A Major Debut, And One Dominating Stretch

4. Arguably The Nation's Top Female Distance Runner Debuts

It took a little over two months and some critical planning, but on October 3 we saw the debut of the top female distance runner in the nation.

Malibu (California) High's Claudia Lane, who won Foot Locker Nationals as a sophomore in 2016, opened her season at the Lake Casitas Twilight Invitational on Tuesday and posted a fantastic performance of 16:32 for 3-miles, earning a nice win.

The effort marked a 37-second improvement from the same position last year, and it set a new course and meet record, surpassing the previous mark held by Sarah Baxter.

Precaution was as much the precedent for the late start as a hopeful earmarking of racing later into January and February in international competitions. Lane's primary goal is to remain healthy longer into the winter, a fact reiterated by Malibu coach Mark Larsen heading into the meet.

While we may not see Lane every week from here on out, be ready for some great racing at important meets soon enough. The best is yet to come.
