Men's and Women's Cross Country Finish Second at CU/UNO Invite

OMAHA, Neb.  -- The Creighton men's and women's cross country teams both finished second at the Creighton/UNO Cross Country Invitational on Saturday morning at Chili Greens in Omaha. There were three teams in the 8,000 meter men's race and four teams competed in the 5,000 meter women's race. The meet was Creighton's first of the year and the only one the teams will host.

Creighton's men were led by freshman Mike Hitt who finished 10th overall with a time of 28:30. Brad Doering from Nebraska won the race with a time of 26:19.

Freshman Tom Shimp was the second-best Jays finisher, He ran the course in 28:58, good for 13th place. Freshmen Mike Neisus, Michael Farley and Collin McDonald crossed the finish line right behind Shimp in 14th, 15th and 16th place to round out the scoring for Creighton. Their times were 29:03, 29:06 and 29:13 respectively.

"It's going to be as tough a competition on the men's side for our top squad as we've ever had," said head coach Chas Davis. "I saw a lot of great things. I wasn't so concerned about the times for this race. We got a lot of confidence today. That's what we needed and that's what we got."

The women's team was paced by freshman Hannah Connealy. Competing in a cross country race for the first time ever, she ran the course in 20:23 and finished sixth overall. Nebraska's Erica Hamik was the individual champion with a time of 18:57.

Freshman Kara Telfer was the next-best runner for Creighton, finishing just behing Connealy in seventh place, Her time was 20:27. Senior Celeste Lorenzo finsiehd in 10th place with a time of 20:42, and freshman Ashley Loerts ran the course in 20:46, good enough for 12th place. The Jays' scoring was rounded out by sophomore Ally Lynn. She finished13th in 21:08.

"A lot of what happened today you're not going to be able to see on paper," said Davis. "There was a lot more to this race than that. Confidence, team feeling -- I thought everyone felt like they were in this together. We really haven't done a whole lot of work yet, so this is just the tip of the iceberg. Very promising of things to come."

The next meet for both the men and women is the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational in Lincoln, Neb., on Sep. 19.
