Marks That Do And Marks That Don't Show In Rankings

If 200 meter dash marks are wind aided, they have not been showing up on athlete profiles, but that will soon be changing.

There are some (modest) changes coming to what shows in the rankings on Colorado Track XC. Here's a short list of the changes you can expect to see over the next month.

1. Marks from non-rankings meets that make incursions into the top 18 marks for any classification-and-gender combination will be pulled from the rankings at the end of the month. This means they will also be pulled from athlete profile pages. Upon request (send an email to versawa@msn.com), those marks can be added at the end of the season. From this point through the end of state qualifying, though, we want an accurate reflection of who is and who is not in a position to qualify for the state meet. So, marks from non-qualifying meets will be pulled where they impact the top 18s. In all other cases, those marks will remain so that they can be used as seed marks.

2. At long last, we are getting the functionality to sort out wind-legal marks from marks that don't meet the wind legal standards in online registration. Once this functionality is added, I will begin posting wind-aided and NWI marks from meets. This means quite a few more marks will be added to the database. Please note, however, that only one mark per athlete per meet can be added to the database. So, if a long jump mark of record for an athlete for a meet is, say 20-10 (+2.4) and there's a best wind-legal mark for the same athlete from the meet of 19-9 (+1.2), I have to make a choice between those marks. If the best wind-legal mark for the athlete impacts the top-18 rankings, that will be the mark added to the database, not the longer wind-aided mark. In all other cases, I will stay with the mark of record for the meet. When this functionality becomes active, I will post an article to inform meet directors of what needs to be done so that their meets seed with only wind-legal marks.

3. When non-wind-legal marks begin being added to the database, the user will need to make sure when using the rankings to determine who is and who is not in a position to qualify for State, the WIND/FAT setting on the rankings is set to FAT/Wind Legal. I will ask that that become the default setting for the Colorado rankings, but I'm not sure that will happen.

4. With this week being spring break (meaning there is a relatively small number of meets--and especially of weekday meets--this week), I'll be combing through old results to ensure I have best wind-legal marks fully up-to-date in the long and triple jumps. This is a bit of a tedious process, but this week is one golden opportunity to get caught up on that.

Thanks! Please contact me with any questions/issues.

As a primer on wind readings here, any mark with an associated wind reading > 2.0 meters per second is considered wind-aided. Any mark without a wind reading, whether specifically marked as NWI or not, is considered non-wind-legal. Only marks with a wind reading less than or equal to 2.0 meters per second in the direction of the effort are considered wind legal.

A mark that is not wind legal by the standards above should never be used as a) a school, meet, or state record, or b) a seed mark for a subsequent meet.

Wind-aided and NWI marks may, however, be used for seeding finals in a prelims/finals formatted meet.
