Austin ISD Cancels Track Meet Due To Bombing Caution

Just hours before local, state and federal authorities closed in on the suspected serial bomber in Austin, Texas, following days of unrest and fear in the state's capitol, the Austin Independent School District cancelled a track meet scheduled for March 21-22 in the city due to an "abundance of caution," according to the Austin American Statesmen.

Late Tuesday, "a detonation of an artillery simulator at a Goodwill store in South Austin" stoked even more fear into residents of the local community, forcing the school district to make a decision for its student-athletes.

The local track meet, which was scheduled to be held at Burger Stadium in Sunset Valley -- less than five miles away from the latest detonation took place Tuesday -- was cancelled after the most recent explosion.

Long before that, though, fear had enveloped Austin. Over the course of 19 days and five explosions, seemingly random and intricate bombs severely injured several individuals and killed two in the city.

Early Wednesday morning, authorities zeroed in on a potential suspect, allegedly 24-year-old Mark A. Conditt, who reportedly set off one final bomb inside his car on the side of Interstate 35 and took his own life.
