Things That Happened This Weekend Besides Penn Relays

Christina AragonElla Donaghu Rewrite 1500m Record Book at Payton Jordan

Christina Aragon burst onto the national scene last May when she ran U.S. No. 5 All-Time 4:16.36 in the 1500m as a junior in high school at the Payton Jordan Invitational. On Sunday night, she returned to her future home at Stanford in memorable fashion. Aragon surged from ninth to first in the final 300 meters of section two of the women's 1500m past a stellar field of NCAA champions and All-Americans for a new best of 4:11.24--No. 4 all-time.

"I'm super psyched," she said. "I was hoping for 4:15, just something a little faster than last year."

The Montana native is just two seconds off qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials. The standard to compete in Eugene in July is 4:09.5.

Earlier in the day, Oregon prep Ella Donaghu finished second in her section of the women's 1500m in 4:15.28. That makes her the No. 5 performer in high school history.

Donaghu closed in 64.9 seconds, faster than any of the assorted collegians and pros in the field.

Both Aragon and Donaghu will compete for Stanford next year.

Immediately after the race, Aragon said that her friend's 4:15 run inspired her.

"It was awesome to get to see Ella," she said. "I think getting to see one of my close friends and future teammates running before me got me really fired up."
